AKAGERA NATIONAL PARK RWANDA

Akagera National Park Rwanda, Rwanda Wildlife Safaris Tours to Akagera Park, Wildlife Safaris To Akagera Park, Rwanda Wildlife Safari Tour Trips. Akagera National Park is found in the East of the destination Rwanda overlooking the savannah plains of Tanzania. Stretching to 1,122km2 in size, Akagera National Park is the only savannah protected area in the whole of Rwanda and is currently run under Public private partnership by the Rwanda Development Board and African Parks.

The name Akagera is derived from the majestic Akagera River recorded to be one of the sources of Nile River – the longest River in the world.  Besides the Akagera River, the Akagera National Park shelters a range of lakes including Lake Ihema – the second largest in Rwanda, Lake Rwanyakizinga, Lake Shakani, Lake Mihindi and Lake Gishanju which together combine to form the largest wetland system in the whole of Central Africa.

Akagera National Park features undulating hills marked with Brachystegia and acacia Woodland interrupted by open grassland patches before paving way for swamp fringed lake series. This diverse landscape provides for existence of a range of flora and fauna which combine to make the park an exciting destination for Rwanda Safaris and Tours.  The famous Mutumba hills to the north of the park rise to 2,000m and offers incredible view of the park savannah plains, Lakes, Rivers and swamps below.

Akagera National Park established in the year 1934 formerly covered 2,500km2 before it was reduced in size to provide the much needed land for the Rwandan refugees who were returning home following the Rwandan Civil War of 1994.

But nevertheless, Akagera National Park is still a sounding conservation area rich in fauna and flora. The park management has also considered the species re-introduction programme which is helping to bring the back some species that had faced extinction. For example, seven lions were re-introduced in the park in July 2015 and they have multiplied to restore the feeling of the King of Jungle in these savannah stretches. The travelers on Safari in Rwanda also find it more exciting.  The plan to re-introduce the Rhinos is also in the offing.

Other species that were restored in the past include; the Masaai Giraffe that was brought in 1986 from Kenya, the Black Rhinos that were introduced in 1958 – 59 but later got extinct in 1980s and finally  elephants that were restocked from Bugesera  following their extinction in 1961.
