Golden Monkeys also scientifically referred to as Cercopithecus kandti is species of Old World Monkey that thrives in Virunga Mountains which comprise of Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda and Congo’s Virunga National Park.
The Species also thrive in the newly established Gishwati Mukura National Park in Rwanda. The golden monkeys are noted to be limited in range to the highland forests mainly close to Bamboo. The golden monkeys are marked with a golden-orange patch on their backs which forms the background for their naming. They thrive in groups with up to thirty (30) members and their diet comprises of bamboo, fruit and leaves but they are as well believed to eat some insects.
But majorly, the golden monkeys prefer areas that are rich in bamboo and fruit feeding on young bamboo leaves, bamboo branch lets and shots, fruits, shrubs and flowers. As a result of the increased habitat loss along with civil wars that have characterized their range for long, the golden Monkeys are listed as endangered on the red list of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

Golden Monkey tracking commences at 7am from Kinigi Park headquarters and lasts for approximately 4 hours. Briefing takes place at Kinigi after which you drive to the trail head from where the trek starts. The habituated troops of golden Monkeys are known to thrive in Bamboo zone on the Mount Sabyinyo slopes.
