Mountain Gorilla Trekking is ranked the best safari activity on the continent of Africa as it presents an opportunity to explore the critically endangered Mountain Gorillas that are known to thrive in only three countries in the world namely; Rwanda, Uganda and Democratic Republic of Congo. The activity commences at 7am from the Volcanoes Park Headquarters at Kinigi where the gorilla groups are allocated and briefing about the conduct of gorilla trekking activity is done. The duration of Gorilla tracking in Volcanoes National Park is unpredictable as it depends on the gorilla movements but an estimate of 2 – 8 hours is always given. Advance booking of the gorilla permit is recommended so as to avoid missing out on the preferred date. The Rwanda gorilla permit costs $750 for each person and is solely sold by Rwanda Development Board (RDB) though travel agents can help to do the booking. The minimum age for Gorilla trekking in Rwanda is 15 years. Only 8 people are allowed to track a single gorilla group per day.

What to Wear during Mountain Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda

The following is a list of the recommended dress code while undertaking gorilla trekking in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park
• Small Backpack to carry packed lunch, drinking water , Binoculars and Camera
• Light weight hiking boots that are water proof and sturdy. They should be able to cover the ankles
• Light weight water proof jacket since it can rain any time in the gorilla forest
• Light weight long wool socks
• Long sleeved shirt and trousers that should be stuck in the socks to prevent ants from getting access to the body
• Bush hat for sun protection
• Sun glasses are also recommended
• Sun screen & insect repellents applied on the body
• Camera to enable you take as many photos as possible of your Mountain Gorilla trekking experience
• Garden gloves to protect the hands against thorns and germs
• Binoculars would be nice to view birds in the forest while on the trek to the Mountain
• In case you have heavy baggage or desire for a push through the challenging sections during the trek, Porters are available at the trail heads and you can hire one.
